Coron vs El Nido: The Ultimate Showdown
If you've started planning a trip to Palawan, you've almost certainly been stuck on this question. Both destinations are extraordinary. Both are remote. Both will make you question why you ever needed anything else from a holiday. But they are profoundly different.
El Nido: The Lagoon Lover's Dream
El Nido is all about those iconic emerald lagoons flanked by vertical limestone karsts that look like they were designed by a film set decorator. The snorkeling is exceptional, the island-hopping routes (Tour A through D) are well-organised, and the sunsets from Las Cabanas beach rank among the best I've ever witnessed.

Best For El Nido:
- First-time visitors to Palawan
- Snorkelers and kayakers
- Instagram photographers
- Those who want more restaurant options
Coron: The Diver's Holy Grail
Coron operates on a different frequency. The town is rougher, more authentic, and the main draw is underwater โ specifically, the extraordinary Japanese WWII shipwrecks in Coron Bay that have become some of the world's most celebrated artificial reefs.
But even non-divers have plenty to adore: Kayangan Lake, rated Asia's cleanest, glows an impossible shade of turquoise. Twin Lagoon, where you can swim through a crack in the cliff from salt water to fresh, is genuinely magical. And Maquinit Hot Springs โ a rare seaside geothermal pool โ is the perfect reward after a day on the water.
Best For Coron:
- Scuba divers (this is world-class)
- History enthusiasts (WWII wrecks)
- Travellers seeking fewer tourists
- Hot spring lovers
The Verdict
If you have 3 days: Coron for the diving, Kayangan Lake, and the raw beauty.
If you have 5+ days: El Nido for the variety and the iconic scenery.
If you have 10 days: Do both. There's a ferry between them.
